The European Resuscitation Council ( ERC ) held its annual congress in Stavanger, Norway, May 10 - 13. 2006. There was a precongress meeting at the Utstein Abbey of specially invited experts, including Dr Michael DeVita. Together with Dr Ken Hillman of Australia, he presented the Medical Emergency Team concept and co-chaired the discussion session on METs. Dr Michael Czekajlo as a senior Pitt CCM Fellow presented a poster on "Evaluation of a Resident Lead Code Team Using the Utstein Reporting of In-Hospital Cardiac Resuscitation".
The University of Stavanger School of Medicine with financial support from the Laerdal Foundation for Acute Medicine during the ERC Congress officially opened its new simulation center, SAFER, i.e. the Stavanger Acute Medicine Foundation for Education and Research. This simulation center has been created, emulating WISER in Pittsburgh. One major difference between the two simulation centers is that SAFER includes a built in rescue ambulance as SAFER emphasizes prehospital care. Dr Ake Grenvik was invited to deliver the keynote address, entitled "The Bjorn Lind - Asmund Laerdal - Peter Safar Legacy. From Pioneering Resuscitation Research to WISER and SAFAR Education".
