Back Injury Prevention Program for HealthCare Professionals to be run at WISER- UPMC Passavant
Back Injury Prevention Program to be run at WISER- UPMC Passavant

Back pain and injury is at epidemic levels in the general population as well as for nurses and nurses aides. Over the last three years WISER Associate Director John O'Donnell has led development of a simulation program to address this critical issue. The original pilot project was conducted at the UPMC Institute for Rehabilitation and Research and demonstrated significant improvements in patient transfer knowledge and skill. These promising pilot results led to a larger pilot program to test the protocols and outcomes in a total hospital environment - this became the MyHealth We've Got your Back Program. This project was supported by the Beckwith Institute, the Center for Quality Improvement and Innovation, WISER, the UPMC Health Plan, the Centers for Rehab Services (CRS) and UPMC McKeesport, the initial hospital test organization.

Significant improvements in patient transfer skills and reductions in injury rates at McKeesport led to the current project. The Back Injury Prevention Program for Healthcare Professionals is being run at UPMC Passavant and the plan is to train more than 700 nurses and nurse aides. The course is again supported by the UPMC HealthPlan as part of their We've Got Your Back program and will also include health coaching, individualized counseling and other health support services. Instructor training took place in July 2008 with transfer training scheduled to be completed by late 2008.
