The Peter M. Winter Institute for Simulation, Education and Research (WISER) has reached a new milestone in being one of the first simulation centers in the country to obtain the endorsement of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). This rigorous process was designed to ensure that quality standards in terms of design and execution of simulation-based education and assessment programs are upheld.
Specifically the ASA endorsement is granted to those simulation programs who demonstrate:
* ASA member value
* Policies and procedures commensurate with high quality educational offerings
* An infrastructure that is consistent with the proposed/described services
* Equipment and space that supports the educational objectives
* An evaluation process for the course, the instructors, and the program
* Policies and procedures to provide ASA members with a confidential and secure environment
* Sound education process for course development and evaluation
* The ability to provide CME
This endorsement is a tribute to the quality of the programs offered, as well as the capabilities of the institute in its abilities to create educationally sound, relevant training programs with a commensurate level of support.
WISER is an Institute of the University of Pittsburgh's Department of Anesthesiology and serves as an integral part of the mission of patient safety at the UPMC Health System. In the academic year from 2007-2008 WISER provided 12,000 training encounters to about 3,500 healthcare providers. WISER is a multidisciplinary training institute with participants ranging from students in schools of Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy, to practicing paramedics, nurses, advanced practice nurses, resident physicians, attending physicians and respiratory therapists.
The success of WISER is directly attributable to the commitment of motivated faculty members and course directors that have created successful programs at the institute for the last 14 years. They have the vision and drive to take the education and assessment of healthcare providers to a new level to improve patient care with the over 90 programs offered by the center.
